Contract Labour (Regulation and Abolition) Act, 1970
Recently, the Supreme Court highlighted that workers engaged in permanent or perennial work should not be classified as contract workers under the Contract Labour (Regulation & Abolition) Act, 1970, to deny them job regularization benefits. The Contract Labour (Regulation and Abolition) Act, 1970, was enacted to regulate the employment of contract labour in certain establishments and abolish it in specific circumstances. It aims to prevent the exploitation of contract labour and improve working conditions. The Act applies to establishments with twenty or more contract workers and contractors with twenty or more employees, excluding those involved in intermittent work or located in special economic zones. Every establishment planning to hire contract workers must obtain registration, while contractors employing twenty or more workers need a license. The Act also prescribes penalties for violations and establishes Central and State Advisory Boards.
